Most Popular Dogs in America for 2013

The American Kennel Club (AKC) maintains an official registry of dogs in the USA, which gives them a huge database to play with. Once a year they turn their database upside-down and shake it to see what falls out, at least in terms of breed popularity. In late January every year, the Club releases their list of breeds, ordered by popularity.

You do have to remember that this is registered dogs, not all dogs - if it were all dogs, mixed breeds would probably be the most popular. But among registered purebred dogs, the 10 most popular breeds of 2013 are

10: Dachshund
9: Rottweiler
8: Poodle
7: Boxer
6: Yorkshire Terrier
5: Bulldog (English)
4: Beagle
3: Golden Retriever
2: German Shepherd
1: Labrador Retriever (see right...)

The top 10 rankings remain unchanged from those of 2012, although there's some jostling going on just beyond the tenth slot. In a single year, French Bulldogs jumped from 14th to 11th and are closing fast on the Doxie. Miniature Schnauzers went the opposite direction, from 13th to 17th. The (Jack) Russell Terrier was the biggest overall loser, dropping from 43 to 102...

The total count of breeds recognized by the AKC in 2013 is 177 (the English Foxhound brings up the rear). New breeds for the year include the Chinook at 156 and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno at 153 (didn't a PPP finish in the final group at Westminster this year?).
