Nulo Medal Series Beef and Rainbow Trout Cat Food
One of kitty’s more interesting quirks is that she pretty much refuses to eat pate-style foods. That’s not really a problem, given the variety of “filets,” shreds, chunks, and flakes on the market. We do, however, try hard to avoid what some call “supermarket” cat foods while also not breaking the bank buying two-dollar cans. Since she only gets an ounce or so twice a day with her dry kibbles, though, a dollar or so a day seems acceptable.
That’s almost exactly what we paid for a can of Nulo Beef and Rainbow Trout Recipe, from the company'sMedal Series, at our neighborhood PetSmart ($1.19 for a 3-ounce can). This brand is new to me, but I thought I’d give it a try. The food has a stew-like consistency, “shreds” of meaty stuff mixed with bits of vegetable matter in a thick liquid. The meat portion is beef, beef liver, and rainbow trout; the fruits and veggies are peas, cranberries, blueberries, and pumpkin. There’s also egg white and beef and herring broth, along with the usual vitamin and mineral additives. Ingredient number one is beef, followed by beef and herring broth then beef liver. Rainbow trout comes in at number six. There’s no grain in the ingredients, and the only “suspect” items on the list are guar gum (a thickener) and sodium selenite – and they’re nowhere near as suspect as grains, byproducts, and artificial flavors and coloring such as one finds in brands like Friskies and Meow Mix. |
