Petstages ORKA Flyer Dog Toy

Do you Have a Disc Dog? An Orka Flyer Really Flies

Labrador with Disc
®Petstages, Inc.
We've all marveled at the dogs galloping across open spaces in hot pursuit of Frisbees®, especially when the complete the charge with a flying leap, snagging the disc in mid-air.
That's why I've wanted for years to teach my dogs that game. A long time ago, somebody gave our first family dog, a lab-shepherd mix, an Aerobie flying ring but he seemed basically uninterested. Our prior Labradors, both the chocolate and the yellow, showed much more interest in chewing any disc in sight to shreds than they did in being a disc dog, but our current blonde fur baby is a definite believer

She has always loved chase and fetch games, screaming across our little park with laser-like focus on the track of her Orka Jack, usually snagging it in the middle of an unpredictable bounce. When I saw the Petstages Orka Flyer at our local pet store, I hoped I'd finally found a disc dog. It looks like my dream's come true.

Description

An Orka Flyer is a nine-inch disc shaped like a Wham-O™ original, except that Petstages makes it from the same blue rubber that's in their Orka Jack instead of plastic. The chewable synthetic stands up to her sharp teeth (not bad: after all, she's a Lab) but's not so hard it will hurt tender mouths. It also floats.

The thickened rim can stand up to a game of tug, and th disc is still easy to fling when slippery with dog drool. Interactive play is key: not even a world-champion disc dog can throw one of these before catching it

An Orka Flyer is thrown like a conventional Frisbee and flies like one, too. It isn't balanced like a $25.95 disc golf model, but it's predictable and will cover reasonable distances. After several practice sessions, our girl has the basics of its flight pattern down and can snag her disc going away like a major league outfielder. She also figured out how to pick it up from the ground, especially on smooth surfaces: she plants one forepaw on an edge, bends up the other edge with her teeth, and slips the other forepaw underneath before shifting her "bite" on the edge again.

If your puppy has chewed up a dozen plastic discs as you try to develop your own disc dog, try an Orka Flyer. If your dog's is a retriever or herder, then this could well be the toy you need to get things "off the ground." Our little miss gives it two paws up!

The Orka Flyer is also available for smaller breeds as the Mini Flyer.

Summary

PLUS: flies like a Frisbee® but withstands puppy chewing; great for interactive training sessions
MINUS: aerodynamics can't match the classic Frisbee®
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: An Orka Flyer is a tough, chew-resistant toy for training your dog to catch a flying disc.
